Getting to Know Relavo: Interview with Board Member Pete Schommer
What Drew You to Relavo Medical’s Mission?

A mutual friend introduced me to Sarah and Relavo, suggesting I might be a good fit for the board. I was immediately inspired by Relavo’s mission. End-stage renal failure significantly impacts patients’ quality of life, especially when dialysis requires frequent visits to a center.

Relavo’s solution offers the potential to transform patient lives by enabling safer, at-home, overnight dialysis through reduced infection rates. This innovation could profoundly impact patients by improving their independence and quality of life.

WHAT DREW YOU TO RELAVO REGARDING THE LEADERSHIP?

When I first met Sarah, it was immediately clear that she’s a humble and approachable person. She has a remarkable ability to make quick, informed decisions even with partial information, which helps drive efficiency and momentum in the development process. Despite being part of a small team, Sarah consistently goes above and beyond, contributing more than her share to ensure the team’s success. Additionally, she’s an excellent communicator, with a natural talent for conveying ideas clearly and effectively.

How Do Your Strengths Bring Value to Relavo?

I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1991 and served six years on active duty before transitioning to the medical device industry. Over the past 27 years, I’ve held roles spanning operations, supply chain, commercial functions, and business development.

My career began in supply chain planning, eventually leading a logistics organization. After earning my MBA, I transitioned into business development and licensing, managing acquisitions and integrations. I spent five years driving future business opportunities for a leading medical device company and eight years working on the launch of Medtronic’s robotic-assisted surgery system.

I’m passionate about bringing medical devices to market that improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, or—ideally—achieve both. My experience with acquisitions, due diligence, and integrations provides valuable insight into business strengths, weaknesses, and risks, which I believe will help advance Relavo’s mission.

What Is Your Message to Relavo Medical’s Employees, Partners, and Customers?

PeritoneX™ is an innovative solution to the significant issue of infections in at-home peritoneal dialysis. By executing our development plans on time, we can positively impact patients’ lives and make at-home dialysis safer and more accessible.

What Are Relavo’s Biggest Challenges, and How Will You Help Address Them?

Relavo faces two primary challenges: fundraising and timely execution—challenges common to any pre-revenue medical device company. I’m confident in the team’s ability to overcome these hurdles, and I plan to assist by sharing my expertise, asking critical questions, and leveraging my network to support their efforts.

What Will Determine Relavo’s Success Over the Next Five Years?

The first and most crucial step is obtaining FDA approval. Without that, progress halts. Following approval, success will hinge on partnering with dialysis providers to integrate the technology while generating real-world evidence to support its adoption.
